Is God Supernatural or just Natural?

Is God supernatural, or is that just normal for Him and His believers?

Podcast Half-A-Dime: Ep 13, Is God Supernatural

Does that mean I should see miracles every day?
Or is that just for “special Christians”?

If you’ve ever thought:

If God is real, why don’t I see Him?
Or
Am I doing faith wrong because I don’t have crazy stories every week?

Then this is for you!

What Do We Mean by “Supernatural”?

Well, ChatGPT says:

In Christian theology, the supernatural qualities of God, often referred to as divine attributes, define Him as existing outside the limitations of the natural world, time, and space. These attributes are classified into incommunicable — meaning belonging to God alone, such as infinity — and communicable — meaning reflected in humans, such as love — which Christians believe are experienced through the work of the Holy Spirit.

So when we say "supernatural," we usually mean something beyond what we can explain by nature and normal life.

God is not part of creation.

He is the One who created it.

He spoke, and things came into being.

That’s in Genesis 1 and Colossians 1:16–17.

From our human view, of course, God looks supernatural.

Miracles.
Healing.
Radical transformation.

That all feels beyond what we can do.

But from God’s perspective, nothing He does is extra.

There is no “extra sauce day” for God.

There’s just Him being Himself:
holy, powerful, loving, just, and fully in control.

A couple of key verses here are:

  • Colossians 1:16–17 — all things created through Him and for Him

  • Hebrews 1:3 — He upholds the universe by His word

So God’s supernatural is just Him being normal.

From Counterfeit Spirituality to the Living God

Coming out of the New Age, I realized that what I was chasing as magical, mystical, or energetic was actually a counterfeit of something real:

a living God who actually moves.

Many experiences that at first glance may seem coincidental are actually divine.

What we call miraculous, God sees as basic.

We see a healing and go, “Wow, that’s supernatural.”

And God is like, “Daughter, that’s just Me being Me.”

The thing is, He is not a vending machine of supernatural experiences.

He is a being who acts out of who He is.

So yes, God is supernatural to us.
But from His side, that’s just normal.

The question is:

What does He invite us into?

What Should Be Normal for Believers?

If you belong to Jesus, the most supernatural thing has already happened:

You went from spiritually dead to alive.

I recently heard on a YouTube podcast that to even recognize God or Jesus, you would need a measure of the Holy Spirit. It is the only way you can truly see, hear, and understand the truth — through the Spirit.

So what should be normal for kingdom life?

A new heart and new desires

Wanting God.
Craving His Word.

Feeling conviction of sin through the Holy Spirit’s still, small voice.

See Ezekiel 36:26–27.

Hearing His voice, not always an audible boom. Often a gentle nudge.

Scripture comes alive.
You get a deep sense of, “This is the way — walk in it.”

See John 10:27.

Answered prayer, not always how we want. But real guidance, comfort, and provision.

Like the Stones song — you can’t always get what you want, but you get what you need.

I know, I know — I’m paraphrasing here. But you get my point.

And Transformation over time

Maybe you don’t see manna falling from heaven.

But you notice:

  • You don’t react like you used to

  • You forgive faster

  • You have peace in storms

Now that is supernatural.

Kingdom normal doesn’t always feel cinematic.
But it is deeply supernatural:

God with you.
God in you.
God working through you.

Heart of God

Now I’d like to encourage you to avoid two extremes.

Extreme 1: Living like God doesn’t really move

This sounds like:

“I believe in God, but I don’t really expect Him to do anything.”

That can lead to dry, heavy religion and putting God in a box.

Extreme 2: Chasing spiritual experiences

This sounds like:

“Did I see a miracle today?”
“Did I feel goosebumps in worship?”

That leads to burnout, disappointment, or opening doors to counterfeit stuff.

When I pray, read the Word, and worship, I like to go back to the words in the song Waymaker:

“Even if I don’t feel Him, He’s working.
Even if I don’t see Him, He’s working.
He never stops, He never stops working.”

That gives me goosebumps every time.

This also gives me peace, and I have faith that He is working things out in the background and that my prayers are in progress.

So what do we need to do?

We root ourselves in Scripture.
We seek God’s face.
And we stay open for Him to move however He chooses — quietly or dramatically.

You might say it this way:

We don’t worship the miracle.
We worship the Miracle Worker.

Now answer these questions.

You can answer them in your heart, in your journal later, or even out loud if you’re walking or driving alone. Hopefully, you are not reading while you're driving.

Question 1

Where have I believed that God doesn’t really move in my life — that His power is for other people, but not for me?

Question 2

Am I more focused on chasing spiritual experiences, or on simply walking with God and trusting Him every minute of every day?

Question 3

What quiet supernatural work has He already done in me that I’ve been overlooking?

And I’d like to encourage you here:

Maybe your biggest miracle right now is that you’re still here.
Still listening. Still reaching for God even after all you’ve walked through. That is not a small thing.

Believe me — I know.

Let's Close in Prayer

Father, I thank You that You are not a distant idea or just a concept in a book.

You are the living God — Creator, Sustainer, Redeemer.

Lord, I bring You my confusion about the supernatural.
Where I’ve been afraid to expect anything from You, soften my heart and grow my faith.

Where I’ve chased signs, feelings, or experiences more than I’ve chased You, I repent.
And I turn my eyes back to You, Lord.

Jesus, I thank You that the greatest miracle is that You saved me, You forgave me, and You made me new.

Holy Spirit, I invite You to make Your presence in my life my new normal.
Teach me to recognize Your voice, to trust Your leading, and to see Your hand in both the big moments and the very ordinary ones.

Help me to walk in a steady, anchored faith each day — expecting You to move and content to simply be with You.

Let my life become a quiet testimony that God with us is more than enough.
In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Alright friends, if this stirred something deep in you — maybe you’re coming out of New Age like I’m doing, and it’s such a process of unravelling — or maybe you’re just hungry to actually experience God and not just hear about Him,

I’d love for you to share this episode with another woman who needs it.
